In chapter 8 Joey and the others were marching into battle. They made their way around the craters to keep their line as good as possible. They were worried that there would be wire there and that means the horses would get injured if they tried to get through in battle. They hadn't seen any enemy yet. Joey was in a gallop and the first terrible shells fell amongst them. The battle had begun. Lots of men fell in pain and agony and lots of horses did the same thing. The squadron were galloping to the wire but only a few reached the wire and Joey was one of them. There were some holes blasted through the wire so they could find a way through. They came to the first line of enemy trenches but they were all empty. Lots of the squadron got hurt when ran into some wire in the woods. Joey knew that there was no way out so he had to jump over the wire to get out. Then they found themselves in amongst the enemy. A group of enemy soldiers were pointing their guns at them. Captain Stewart and Trooper Warren were not happy because now the soldiers and horses were prisoners of war.
